When I was born, atmospheric CO2 was 371 ppm. today it’s 416 ppm. every summer since 2016, we’ve received the same news almost every year: this year is the hottest on record. Every year more and more extreme weather and climate disasters erupt, from flash floods and thunderstorms to droughts and melting glaciers.Greta Thunberg is an icon for all young people of my generation. As a libertarian, I don’t like the idea that vegetarians are morally superior to meat eaters. However, I do actively choose foods with a small carbon footprint. I’ve been using Ecosia as my default search engine for about a year now, and although duckduckgo is more private and Google’s searches are of higher quality, I’m willing to sacrifice some privacy and convenience in exchange for offsetting my personal carbon footprint. I choose green bank’s recommended bank bunq and refuse to invest in fossil fuels. I hope that everyone can contribute to the progress of the world as a whole, starting with achieving personal carbon neutrality. I also have some policy ideas, such as whether we can make it a personal carbon neutral obligation for every citizen with a certain financial status, who needs to calculate their carbon footprint every year and offset it by supporting programs such as reforestation. Could we impose a carbon tax on large corporations and the wealthy and earmark the tax money for carbon offsetting programs? Support high subsidies for solar panels for home use, support retrofitting older homes to keep them warm, support the creation of climate shelters, support amending the Dublin Convention to introduce a definition of climate refugees, support research and development on artificial meat, legislate to force food producers to label the carbon footprint of their food as well as their ratings on their packaging, and subsidize food with a low carbon footprint. Support research on carbon capture and recovery technologies. I would like to discuss these policy ideas, tools and find the best strategy to achieve the overall goal of carbon neutrality and carbon offsetting as soon as possible.
Because I defend the right to free speech and oppose the cancel culture, I do not define myself as a radical feminist who denies the existence of the cancel culture. As a gender queer, I would define myself as a trans feminist. I also believe that inequality exists not only between genders, but also between economic conditions, family origins, dictatorships vs. democracies, physical and mental conditions, etc., so I also subscribe to some of the ideas of intersectional feminism. I believe that the pay gap between genders should be eliminated and would support legislation that would require gender-insensitive industries and companies to remove photos and gender from the requirements for applicants’ resumes. Women should be given free menstrual hygiene products (economies that don’t have the means to do so should at least make it so that they don’t tax menstrual hygiene products) as well as one day of paid menstrual leave per month. Both men and women should be granted maternity leave of sufficient length. Education on gender equality and gender diversity should be universalized in compulsory education. Support the development of male contraceptives. All people, especially young women under the age of 25, have the right to free contraceptives. Domestic violence shelters should be established in all municipalities. I am also particularly interested in engaging in a full brainstorming and policy debate with you to find the optimal solution for achieving gender equality in society as a whole.
